Standing Stone Games just released their July 2026 Letter to the Players for The Lord of the Rings Online! This major announcement outlines what to expect from the upcoming summer patch, Update 49: In Good Company. On top of that, we have information on a brand-new Monster Play class, huge overhauls to the player versus player (PvMP) and the Etternmoors, and teasers for the highly anticipated 2026 expansion. We also have dug up some additional details on the expansion including the likely location that the story will go!
The upcoming summer update serves as a stepping stone to the autumn expansion, focusing heavily on an overhaul of the PvMP system, advancing the Legendary Servers, and introducing highly requested quality-of-life fixes for LOTRO players. The expansion details completely under wraps until Gen Con later this year, but we should know more on July 31st!
New Monster Class: The Angmarim Sorceress arrives as the first new Monster Player class in 18 years, available via the LOTRO store.
Player Versus Player Overhaul: The Ettenmoors is getting a massive shakeup with immediate artifact recoveries, forced siege warfare, and the reopening of the Delving of Fror.
Legendary Servers Advance: As the servers push into the Mordor and North Mirkwood level range, all Nine Nazgûl may be encountered, dropping upgraded, account-wide loot.
QoL and Gearing: Expect improved lighting in dark areas, wider access to older armor sets, a full rotation of summer festivals, and refreshed Delving rewards.
In addition to the official announcements on the Update 50 expansion pack, we have more details on what to expect. While the developers have commented that the story is going up north, we have found deep in the datamine some indications that the next expansion is going to Rhun! Specifically, the LOTRO game files have ties to a few zones located in the brand-new Rhun region.
View SourceAs we reach the midpoint of our 2026 development cycle and bring our 19th Anniversary celebration to a close, our sights are firmly set on autumn and the next major expansion for The Lord of the Rings Online.
Before we talk about the expansion, however, we have one more major update arriving this summer! Our next update focuses on quality-of-life adjustments, getting Delving Rewards up to date, focusing on fun summertime events, adding new encounters and rewards to the Legendary Servers, and adding exciting changes to the Ettenmoors. Including the addition of the first Monster Player class in nearly 20 years!
Quality of Life Adjustments
The summer update brings a wave of highly requested quality of life improvements designed to make your adventures smoother, clearer, and more rewarding. From expanding armour set availability across older content to improving visibility in some of the world’s darkest corners, we are tackling a wide range of long-standing issues. Delving Reward Updates
The Delving system is getting its major rewards update just in time for summer, and with plenty of time to gear up for the expansion later this year. New rewards can be earned through barter or discovered within Delving treasure, offering exciting new opportunities for adventurers seeking powerful equipment. Whether you are a seasoned Delver or looking for a reason to jump in for the first time, these new rewards make every expedition more worthwhile than ever.
Summertime Events and Rewards
As Summer heats, so does the adventure! Ill Omens returns with a fresh rewards, while Myrtle Mint refreshes her trade offers with new opportunities for eager collectors. Looking ahead, the Farmer’s Faire is just around the corner, bringing a new selection of rewards to earn and enjoy.
As summer gives way to autumn, the Legendary Item and Monster Play reward tracks will begin their seasons with new rewards. The season closes with the return of The Treasure Bugan, followed by The Tale of the Shipwrecked Mariners and everyone’s favorite birthday celebration—Bilbo’s Birthday!
Legendary Server Updates
Later this summer, the Legendary Worlds Angmar and Mordor reach a major milestone. As players venture into the Mordor and North Mirkwood level bands, all Nine Nazgûl enter the fray, opening the door to some of the most challenging encounters yet.
Their arrival also expands the server’s reputation and rewards! The highest level of the barter system increases, providing even more unique and valuable rewards to pursue. In addition, lesser wraiths will now drop increased amounts of Tattered Shadows, helping adventurers progress more quickly.
Be sure to visit the barter vendors and claim these new, unique server rewards. Once earned, they can be collected across your account, ensuring your accomplishments are carried forward wherever your journey takes you.
The Angmarim Sorceress
For the first time in more than 18 years, the Monster Player side of the battle welcomes a new class: the Angmarim Sorceress.
Launching with Update 49: In Good Company, the Sorceress will be available through the LOTRO Store independently, or with three starter bundles. The bundles will provide access to all her higher tier skills, traits, and up to three exclusive launch skins.
The Advanced Bundle includes a unique new March! Appearance: the personal snowstorm along with 1000 Martar, 10 ballista schematics, 10 battering ram schematics, 10 morale and power potions, normally available on the Monster Player reward track or at outpost barter vendors, and 10 physical and tactical mitigation rewards also found on the Monster Player reward track. The Supreme Bundle includes an additional March! Appearance: Umbral Flame, 2000 Martar, and 5 more of each of the other items from the Advanced Bundle. These additional items are claimed on the next monster player to log into the game after purchase.
We will share a much deeper look at the Angmarim Sorceress, her abilities, and her role on the battlefield in a dedicated article before launch.
The Delving of Fror Reopens
The depths of the Ettenmoors stir anew.
With the release of In Good Company, the Delving of Fror reopens, giving both Free Peoples and Monster Players a renewed reason to descend into the darkness below. Expect new items, new quests, updated encounters, and a fully refreshed experience throughout the dungeon.
Deep within the Ettendeep, Gaergoth’s control has tightened, and his influence has provided new strength for those under his control.
Artifact Control Becomes Dynamic
We are reworking the Artifact capture system at Ost Ringdyr and Dar-gazag to create more dynamic battles across the Ettenmoors. When an Artifact Bearer is defeated, the Artifact no longer disappears for 30 minutes and instead falls to the ground, where it can be immediately recovered by either faction. If the artifact remains abandoned it returns to the last location where it was controlled after five minutes
Siege! Revisions
Siege is receiving several important updates. Players and monster players will gain access to two new ballista and one new battering ram to introduce more variety to the defence and attack aspects of siege.
Capturing Lugazag and Tírith Rhaw will become more involved as well. Towers can no longer be flipped simply by defeating their commander. Instead, players will again need to defeat the entire command unit before the keep falls under the attacker’s control.
We will also introduce new ways to strengthen keep commanders, revising how Infamy and Glory are earned.
Adjustments to the Underseaths
Since their inception, the passages that provide direct access into Lugazag and Tírith Rhaw have become the preferred method to enter the towers, bypassing siege gameplay entirely. These ingress into the towers from the passages are being removed.
Underseath relics gain new importance. Rather than being used for the Hoarfall buff, relics can now be carried from the Underseaths and delivered to Dar-gazag or Ost Ringdyr Delving of Frór entrances. Their capture functions much like the Artifacts and creates another strategic objective for both factions.
Looking Ahead to Autumn
You may have noticed that one major topic is absent from this letter, our autumn expansion.
That omission is intentional.
This year, we will be unveiling details about the expansion at Gen Con.
There, we will reveal the expansion name, its setting, and the broad outline of the next Epic Chapter in The Lord of the Rings Online. Shortly following that announcement, we will share detailed articles revealing the major features of our next expansion.
As development enters its final stretch, we are eager to show you more, not only about these new features, but also the heroes, foes, and adventures that await in the next chapter of Middle-earth.
Following Gen Con, expect a steady stream of reveals and deep dives as we pull back the curtain on everything coming this autumn.
Until then, there is plenty to enjoy this summer: festivals, the new six-player instance, a revitalized Monster Player experience, and much more.
Thank you for reading and thank you for being such an incredible community. We look forward to sharing more with you.
