Virtues are one of the most important progression systems in The Lord of the Rings Online. Virtue Traits provide massive stat boosts for your character, improving everything from your defense and survivability to your damage output. However, with the maximum Virtue rank now sitting at 100 (unlocked at the level 160 cap), grinding out Virtue Experience (sometimes referred to as VXP) can feel like a daunting task.
Unlike gear, Virtues aren’t replaced with every level cap increase and endgame update. They are the most efficient way to boost your character for the long haul while providing crucial stats to succeed in challenging endgame content and raids. If you are trying to figure out the most efficient ways to cap out your Virtues, you need to know exactly where to spend your time. Some methods can be repeated every single week, while others provide massive, one-time bursts of experience.
If you are enjoying this LOTRO Hub guide, consider listening to our partner Lord of the Ambience while reading (read more about our LOTRO Hub partnership program)! Let’s break down every single source of Virtue XP in LOTRO and the fastest ways to farm it in 2026!
Before you start farming, it is critical to understand how Virtue XP is applied to your character. You can have up to 5 Virtues slotted into your active build at any given time, which will provide large stat bonuses with primary, secondary, and tertiary stats boosts. Unslotted Virtues that you have leveled up provide smaller stat boosts to either damage (physical and tactical mastery) or health (maximum morale). All Virtue Traits provide larger stats the higher level they are – even the unslotted passive Virtues can significantly add up!
Selecting your “Earning” Virtue: Open your Trait Tree Panel (default key ‘J’) and go to the Virtues tab. You must select one Virtue to be “Earning”. All Virtue XP you gain will funnel directly into this specific Virtue until it hits its level cap.
The Level Cap Rule: Your maximum Virtue rank is dictated strictly by your character’s level. With the current cap raised to level 160, your personal Virtue rank limits scale using the following exact formulas:
Character Level / 2 (rounded down).Character Level - 55.The Overflow Rule: If you earn Virtue XP while your chosen Earning Virtue is capped, the game will automatically distribute that experience to the next available slotted Virtue from left to right. If all slotted Virtues hit your character’s current cap, the experience automatically funnels into your lowest level unslotted Virtues, then prioritizing Virtues in alphabetical order.
If you have already cleared out easy Deeds that give Virtue XP, you will need to rely on repeatable content to finish capping your Virtues. These are the absolute best weekly and daily grinds to focus on.
Missions are instanced, bite-sized quests that scale to your level. By far the most consistent and popular way to farm VXP every week is by completing the weekly Mission wrapper quests.
On a Mission (Weekly): Complete 15 Missions in a week to earn a large chunk of Virtue XP.
On a Continuing Mission (Weekly): Complete 45 Missions in a week for an even larger payout.
Since you can run Missions very quickly (especially on high damage classes — check out our list of the easiest classes in LOTRO), knocking these out every week is incredibly efficient.
Whenever a seasonal event is active (such as the Yule Festival, Midsummer, or the Farmer’s Faire), the event will always feature wrapper quests. Completing a certain number of daily festival quests will progress a larger weekly or seasonal quest that rewards massive amounts of Virtue XP. Earn your cosmetics and level your Virtues all at once with LOTRO Festivals!
Note: Only available to level cap characters.
Introduced in the Before the Shadow expansion and expanded heavily since, the Delving system offers high-difficulty scaling instances. Completing the weekly Delving wrapper quests will reward you with significant Virtue XP alongside your high-tier gear and Delving Writs.
Once you reach the higher levels (from Minas Morgul all the way through to the latest level 160 expansion content), you will unlock regional weeklies, as well as Allegiance system repeatable quests. These usually involve completing a set number of bounties, daily quests, or instance quests for that specific expansion hub or faction. They almost always reward substantial Virtue XP.
Do not forget to log in! Simply opening your daily Silver Hobbit Present provides a small, guaranteed chunk of Virtue XP. VIP players receive even more Virtue XP from their premium Hobbit gifts, making this a slow but completely effortless way to build up your stats over time.
While weekly wrappers are great for repeatable income, the consistent way to get massive bursts of VXP is by completing landscape Deeds — either while leveling as a beginner or by going back and completing Deeds from lower-level zones.
Every region in Middle-earth has specific Slayer deeds (e.g., defeating 60 Goblins in the Shire). Completing the basic tier of a slayer deed typically rewards a flat 2,000 VXP, while completing the Advanced tier typically rewards an additional 2,000 VXP. The fastest way to farm these is to return to low-level starter zones (like Ered Luin or the Shire) when you are a high level and instantly defeat everything in sight. However, it can be quite helpful to make the push to finish these while leveling so you don’t have to take the time and effort to go back!
Simply riding your mount to specific landmarks, ruins, or camps within a region will complete Explorer deeds, giving you a quick 2,000 VXP. These are incredibly fast to complete and require zero combat. Grab your favorite mount, a Hobbit snack, and ride through LOTRO’s beautiful Middle-earth to earn moderate Virtue XP as a bonus!
When you complete all the Explorer, Quest, and Slayer deeds in a specific region, you will often complete a Meta-Deed for that zone (such as “Deeds of Bree-land”). These Meta-Deeds reward the largest single drops of Virtue XP in the entire game. If you are a completionist, clearing out entire regions will help cap your Virtues fast, ensuring your character is as powerful as they can be while leveling and saving you grinding time at endgame.
If you want to cut down the time it takes to farm your Virtues without buying a complete level skip, two specific consumable items will become your friends:
Slayer and Skill Deed Boosts: Often referred to by their old name of “Accelerators,” these items (available in the LOTRO Store, from Hobbit Presents, or various other boxes) halve the number of mob kills required to complete a Slayer deed. When stacked with high-level damage in a low-level zone, this is the fastest possible way to complete Deeds.
Virtue Acceleration Tomes: These tomes grant a pool of “Bonus VXP” (e.g., 2,000 Bonus Virtue XP). While the buff is active, any Virtue XP you earn from deeds or quests is effectively doubled until the bonus pool is completely depleted. Essentially, these give you the amount of bonus VXP, just over time as you do activities that reward VXP.
If you want to skip the grind entirely, the absolute fastest way to accumulate Virtue XP is through a “Valar” Level Boost (such as the Valar to 150 item). Due to several generous developer giveaways over the years, many players have these sitting in their vaults. Future giveaways can also be a great opportunity to significantly boost your Virtues!
When you consume a Valar package, you don’t just jump in character levels—you also receive a massive coffer of Virtue XP tokens (typically containing up to 15 or more individual 20,000 VXP items). This allows you to instantly max out your core 5 slotted Virtues right out of the gate. For alts or returning players looking to catch up to the level 160 endgame, using a Valar boost is the ultimate shortcut to powering up your character permanently!
Now that you know how to farm Virtue XP, which 5 Virtues should you actually be funneling your experience into? While your exact setup will depend on your class, playstyle, and in-game goals, there are universally recognized “top tier” Virtues for different roles.
For DPS and Solo Leveling (Offense): When you are questing alone or filling a damage role in a group, you want to kill things before they kill you.
Physical DPS (e.g., Hunters, Champions, Burglars): Focus on Valour (Physical Mastery), Confidence (Critical Rating), and Wit (Finesse).
Tactical DPS (e.g., Rune-keepers, Lore-masters, Minstrels): Focus on Honesty (Tactical Mastery), Confidence (Critical Rating), and Wit (Finesse).
For High-Tier Difficulty & Group Content & Raiding (Defense): Once you reach endgame, surviving massive hits becomes one of your primary concerns. Bosses and enemies heavily utilize Tactical (magical/elemental) damage, making Tactical Mitigation the most valuable defensive stat in the game.
Universal Defense: Fidelity and Tolerance are the absolute best virtues for surviving endgame content due to their massive Tactical Mitigation boosts.
Bulk & Survival: Loyalty (Vitality) and Honour (Maximum Morale and Resistance) are excellent for rounding out your health pool so you can survive massive sudden damage spikes.
For Other Roles (Healer, Tank, Support): Your Virtues will depend largely on your exact needs for your character and what you do in LOTRO! Mixing and matching offensive and defensive Virtues provides a great start.

No! The system is completely safe. If your currently selected Earning Virtue hits its level cap, any extra VXP will automatically overflow into your other slotted Virtues (from left to right). If all your slotted Virtues are maxed, it will go to the lowest-ranked unslotted Virtue in alphabetical order. The only time you “lose” Virtue XP is if you have capped every single Virtue Trait, which would be quite the accomplishment!
Do I lose Virtue XP if my Earning Virtue is maxed out?
No! The system is completely safe and does the math for you. If a quest gives you 2,000 VXP but your Earning Virtue only needs 500 to reach its cap, the remaining 1,500 VXP instantly overflows into your next available Virtue. No VXP is wasted in the middle of a turn in or deed completion! If my Earning Virtue caps out while I am turning in a quest, is the remaining VXP lost?
To hit the current Rank 100 cap on all 21 Virtues, you would need well over 3.7 million Virtue XP. This is designed to be a long-term goal. Most players only focus on completely maxing out their 5 active, slotted Virtues first, which is easily achievable just by questing, completing Deeds, and doing your weekly Missions!
How much total VXP do I need to max every single Virtue?
No, it is highly recommended to avoid buying direct Virtue ranks and boosts from the store. If you want to spend LOTRO Points to speed up your progression, saving up for a Valar level boost provides substantially more value for your LOTRO Points, even if you don’t use the actual level boost item!Should I buy Virtues ranks and boosts directly from the LOTRO Store?
While leveling, slotting offensive Virtues (like Valour or Confidence) will help you defeat enemies faster, speeding up your questing. However, for difficult endgame instances, defensive Virtues (like Fidelity or Tolerance) become more helpful to survive high tactical damage from bosses and enemies. If you have the Landscape Difficulty turned up, defensive virtues are also helpful to survive.
Are defensive or offensive Virtues better for leveling?
