Picking your home in Middle-earth changed forever with the 2025 opening of 64-bit servers in the Lord of the Rings Online. Now that the legacy servers are retired, choosing a LOTRO server is all about finding the right community for you.

All modern LOTRO servers now run on upgraded architecture, drastically reducing hitching and rubber banding that was fitting for the name LagTRO. While you can play on any server from anywhere, they are optimized by region.
| Server Name | Region Tag | Server Type | Community Focus |
| Glamdring | US | Standard | The main US hub; highest population. |
| Sting | US | Standard | The “alternative” US hub; less crowded. |
| Peregrin | US | Roleplay (RP) | The official home for US immersion. |
| Orcrist | EU | Standard | The main European hub. |
| Grond | EU | Standard | The “alternative” EU hub; less crowded. |
| Meriadoc | EU | Roleplay (RP) | The official home for EU immersion. |
| Angmar | Legendary | VIP Only | Progression server (US-based). |
| Mordor | Legendary | VIP Only | Progression server (EU-based). |
VIP means you have a paid subscription to LOTRO.
Since the great migration, the “personalities” of the old servers have consolidated into these new homes.
Glamdring: If you’re looking for the successor to Arkenstone, this is it as the busiest server in the game. If you want to maximize your high-end endgame, raiding, and PvMP experience along with a World Chat that never sleeps, Glamdring is the choice.
Sting: As the community often says, Sting is like a less popular Glamdring. It’s perfect for players who want the standard US experience but prefer a bit more breathing room in quest hubs and an overall calmer social experience.
Peregrin: This is the new sanctuary for roleplayers. It inherited the spirit of Landroval. Expect music festivals in Bree and players staying “in character” during roleplaying. Note that you do not have to “roleplay” if you join Peregrin!
Orcrist: Mirroring Glamdring, this is the busiest server in Europe. It’s highly active and very competitive in the endgame scene.
Grond: Grond is like a less popular Orcrist. It has been said that you will run into a larger mix of German and French players here following the consolidation of the dedicated German and French servers.
Meriadoc: The official EU Roleplay server, carrying the torch from once stricter immersion traditions of the old Laurelin. As with Peregrin, roleplaying is not required on Meriadoc!
The Angmar (US) and Mordor (EU) servers are the newest Legendary progression worlds in LOTRO, having launched in August 2024. Unlike standard servers, they gate content by level cap and expansion, slowly unlocking new content and levels over time to emulate the game’s original release cycle.
The Veil of the Nine: This is a special mechanic exclusive to these Legendary servers. Ringwraiths (Nazgûl) can randomly appear in the open world, turning a simple questing trip into a massive, world-boss encounter.
If you are a returning player looking for your old characters, you will notice your old server is likely missing or inaccessible. On August 31, 2025, the remaining 32-bit standard servers (such as Arkenstone, Brandywine, Evernight, Gladden, and Laurelin) were permanently closed for play.
These are now referred to as the “Dark Worlds”. You cannot log into these servers to play, manage characters, or your inventory and storage. They currently only exist in the game launcher menu so that you can initiate free character transfers to the new 64-bit servers. Standing Stone Games currently intends to leave these Dark Worlds available for transfers until at least October 1, 2027.
Note: The “Ancient Worlds” – the first set of dark worlds that closed during the 2015 consolidation had a final transfer window that closed in August 2025. Characters left on those specific servers are permanently lost.
All servers were upgraded in 2025, but the US servers (Glamdring/Sting/Peregrin) are physically located in Las Vegas, while the EU servers (Orcrist/Grond/Meriadoc) are located in Amsterdam. For the best experience, pick the region closest to you.Which server has the least lag?
Yes. Transfers are strictly region-locked. Players coming from US Dark Worlds (like Arkenstone or Brandywine) can only transfer to the new US 64-bit servers (Glamdring, Sting, Peregrin). EU players (from servers like Evernight or Laurelin) can only transfer to EU servers. Are server transfers region-locked?
Treebeard reached its final level cap (130) and was officially closed in the summer of 2025. Unlike the standard Dark Worlds, characters left on Treebeard can be transferred for free to either a US or EU 64-bit server. However, once you make this choice, it is permanent. What happened to the Treebeard Legendary Server?
Most of your data (inventory, wallet, reputation) moves with you, but a few things do not. In-game mail and active auctions are permanently lost during the jump, so clear those out before initiating. Your progress on the Legendary Items Reward Track is also server-specific and does not carry over. Will I lose anything when I transfer my characters?
When you use the launcher to transfer your first character off of a Dark World, you must check the “Shared Items” box in the transfer menu. This ensures your account-wide storage, wardrobe, and destiny points move to your new LOTRO home! How do I transfer my Shared Storage and Wardrobe?
